Norwegian Fjord from NorthWest Therapeutic Riding Center was Chosen Prestigious "Equine of the Year" by NARHA Kleng, an 18-year-old Norwegian Fjord horse who has carried hundreds of disabled riders on his strong back over the years at the NorthWest Therapeutic Riding Center (NWTRC) outside Bellingham, Washington, won the 2009 Equine of the Year Award, presented in Fort Worth, Texas by the NARHA, a national association of equine assisted activity and therapy. Kleng has "a strong steady walk, a tireless trot and a ‘rocking horse’ canter," according to Julia Bozzo, his owner and executive director of NWTRC. A gentleman and a dandy horse, Kleng jumps, trail rides, lunges well with a rider and is trained to pull a cart. Trained since the age of four to work in equine-assisted activities, Kleng has worked as a therapy horse at NWTRC for 13 years. Kleng performs in many disciplines, in many environments and for many ability levels. "He thrives from lots of riding and handling and always seems to look forward to the next challenge," Bozzo commented. Grand Mobility – Advanced Joint Support Formula for Dogs by Grand MeadowsProduct review by Karen Pickering
Endorsed by the National Animal Supplement Council, Grand Mobility provides maximum support for healthy joint function and connective tissue health, formulated to help protect your dog's joints for long-term benefits. The product is a combination of hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate, MSM, type II collagen, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and 600 mg of glucosamine. As we talk about aging horses this month, I thought it appropriate to take a look at ways to help our aging dogs as well. My border collie can be a picky eater, but she accepted these beef-flavored wafers without a second thought. I wanted to start her on the product young, in order to get her used to them before mobility became an issue. She currently plays hard and has no soreness or stiffness, so I can only speak to its effectiveness from the perspective of the science behind the product, but she readily eats the wafer, and that’s half the battle! For more information visit www.grandmeadows.com or call 1-800-255-2962. --- Courbette E-Z Navigator Saddle

The special spring tree with a soft padded seat comes in a variety of tree widths. Black with red or blue seat. Opti-Cleanse™ helps support normal GI health and function in horses of all ages, and it is the only psyllium-based supplement enriched with Diamond V XPC™ yeast culture for added palatability. Dr. Rob McCoy, Manna Pro’s Vice President of Nutrition, says horses that are fed on the ground or consume pasture grasses and hays may ingest dirt and sand, which accumulate in the GI tract. “Over time, the dirt and sand will build up in the intestines and eventually cause discomfort,” Dr. McCoy says, “and some adult horses may carry 30-60 pounds before showing signs of pain.” Although horses naturally rid their system of sand and dirt in their feces, the amount of sand is often too great to be eliminated naturally. “Psyllium-based supplements are widely regarded as the most safe and effective way to eliminate excess sand,” Dr. McCoy says. Manna Pro’s line of Equine Health supplements was developed by PhD nutritionists and is backed by Manna Pro’s satisfaction guarantee. For more information, please visit www.mannapro.com. -- New UP-RIGHT® Anti-Cast Safety Strips™AAI Safety Products & Equipment's new Up Right® Anti-Cast Safety Strips™ are reformulated and available in newly developed safety materials. The Up-Right Strips' new materials offer a revolutionary way to protect horses from unnecessary injuries when “cast” in their stalls or enclosures. The strips are veterinarian recommended and approved. In their new book, Horses with a Mission: Extraordinary True Stories of Equine Service (New World Library, September 2009), best-selling, award-winning authors Allen and Linda Anderson chronicle 21 true stories of horses who have chosen their paths in life or led people to find their own callings. These horses give without expecting a return, other than maybe the occasional carrot. Renowned equine artist and founder of Spirit of Horse Gallery, Kim McElroy of Kingston, Washington has her story featured in this unique book. “Avenger – Destiny Comes Full Circle” is a story of synchronicity in which McElroy’s early inspired painting of Destiny’s Avenger launched her career as an equine artist and later reunited her with the horse from thousands of miles away. The painting also connected Avenger with one of McElroy’s clients who had longed for him as her dream horse and wound up saving his life. Horses with a Mission is available in bookstores nationwide and online. Learn more at www.horseswithamission.comLabels: Spotlight on the News

Pat Hooks' set of three DVDs, “Fix it up for the Horse,” is a perfect tool to learn the bare basics of horsemanship as well as review some essential tools for improving your horsemanship skills. Pat takes you from understanding footfall to knowing where your horse’s feet are in all his gaits to the basic tools used in working with your horse both on the ground and in the saddle. The DVD set also includes some simple steps to breaking your colt and a discussion on working with mustangs. Pat's easy-to-understand techniques break down the most difficult maneuvers. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced horseman, his perspective is gentle and effective. I’ve seen him work with problem horses and problem people (namely me), and he always brings a thorough understanding of the human-horse relationship. I recommend this DVD as an essential in every horse person’s library. For more information contact Hooks Ranch at (580) 423-7482 or www.hookshorseranch.com. __ The Gift of Renewal: Nikwax Leather Cleaner Product Review by NWHS Staff
Nikwax Leather Cleaner is a spray-on cleaner that works great on saddles, jackets, and any of your smooth leather goods (the company offers other products for use on nubuck and suede). I used it on an old pair of boots, and I'm fairly certain that if it could have repaired the scuffs as well, they would have passed for new after the cleaning. The one drawback is that I found the smell unpleasantly overpowering while working with the product. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully and have plenty of air circulation while spraying; the scent fades as it dries, so it is not a long-term problem. The best thing about this product for users in the Pacific Northwest is that it works on mold, so if you have items that have been out a little too long in the damp, Nikwax Leather Cleaner will help. Two Products from Farrier’s Formula® for Healthier Horses
Farrier's Formula Double Strength for Healthy HoovesThe nutrients in Farrier’s Formula Double Strength important for healthy hooves are provided at twice the concentration compared to the original Farrier’s Formula. The Farrier’s Formula Double Strength 11 pound nitrogen flushed bucket or vacuum bag delivers twice the number of daily doses compared to original Farrier’s Formula. This equates to a 60 day supply for a 1000 pound horse at the adult replenishment feeding level, or 120 days when feeding at the adult maintenance level--with the added benefit of being more economical to feed. --- Review of Farrier's Formula Barn Bag Supplementby Karen PickeringI recently tested the Barn Bag supplement by Farrier's Formula on my older mare, Dawn. My biggest challenge with her is getting her to eat anything other than her regular grain. When feeding any type of supplement, she immediately knows I've added something different and will eat around it, leaving most of the supplement behind. With the Farrier's Formula product she readily ate the supplement without any fuss--she would even eat it out of my hand. As far as noticeable difference in skin and coat, I don't see much change. She was in good condition prior to using the product, so the key thing for me was that I know she's getting all the nutrients she needs because she will actually eat it. For additional information visit www.lifedatalabs.com. --- Dry Stall for Healthy BarnsProduct review by Raye Lochert
I first used Dry Stall in 2003, and now I could not live without it. I had six inches of mud in the stall runs and my horses were miserable, suffering from thrush and scratches. Then I laid down the Dry Stall. It kept raining that year and I did not have a mud issue at all. The following year, I put down the Dry Stall before the rain. I used a lot less and never even saw mud where I used the product. Dry Stall has eliminated scratches here at our barn, and thrush is almost nonexistent. Cleaning the stalls is much easier with Dry Stall in the outdoor portions. It lasts longer than most people would think, and it works into our compost program very well, improving the aeration of our compost in a big way. Dry Stall is a product worth trying if you have mud issues, for the sake of your horse’s health and your peace of mind. Learn more at www.drystall.com. --- Safe-Guard® Equi-bits®, NaturallyEating alfalfa based pellets comes naturally to horses and with Equi-bits, one dose deworming comes naturally to their owners. Equi-bits pellets are a top dress form that allows easy, effective deworming without handling your horse. In one treatment, Equi-bits help control large strongyles, small strongyles, pinworms and ascarids and are safe even for foals and pregnant mares. One pouch treats a 1,250 lb. horse. Equi-bits are apple flavored and have an overwhelming horse acceptance – a great choice for any rotational deworming plan, especially for those hard to catch or hard to worm horses. Fenbendazole, the active ingredient in all Safe-Guard products, is safe for foals and pregnant mares and can help manage resistance when used in an annual rotational deworming program. For more information on Safe-Guard and rotational deworming, visit www.getrotationright.com. --- A Completely Different Way to Deal with Inflammation!Elara Nutriceuticals Inc. has stayed true to its direction of merging nature and technology with the creation of Växamine EQ™, the world’s first and only all natural, botanical equine COX-2 and 5-LOX inhibitor. Växamine EQ is a safe, highly potent natural alternative to prescription strength anti-inflammatory pain relievers. In the treatment of pain and inflammation, Växamine EQ sets itself apart in several ways when measuring up to other anti-inflammatories. However, Växamine EQ’s most impressive attribute is that it out performs other so-called natural anti-inflammatories, yet doesn’t produce the harmful side effects associated with NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like aspirin, Vioxx®, ibuprofen and other drugs such as bute, Banamine (flunixin meglumine), and dexamethasone. Learn more about Växamine EQ at www.vaxamineeq.com. --- Bob Avila Straight Roller Bit/AVB-105Product review by Karen PickeringI began using this bit last fall with my mare. I’d been riding in a snaffle and it was clearly time I move into leverage bit. The Bob Avila Straight Roller is a great all-around bit, and my mare easily accepted the change from her customary snaffle. The mouthpiece has a mild curve with cheek pieces that swivel on the ends of the mouthpiece. The very ornate cheek pieces make a nice bit for the show pen at a very affordable price. The mild mouthpiece and short shank make this a very gentle bit, and the sweet iron mouthpiece with copper roller is curved just slightly to offer tongue relief. Max E Glo Complete - A High Fat Performance Horse SupplementMax E Glo Stabilized Rice Bran is recognized as a source of “cool calories” and is the base ingredient in Max E Glo Complete. This quality ingredient is a rich source of plant-based oils, making it a safe and effective way to provide the calories needed by a young growing horse, a hard working equine athlete, or a thin horse that needs to regain some condition. Another key benefit of Max E Glo is its stability. If not properly stabilized, the oils in rice bran oxidize and become rancid. Max E Glo is thoroughly stabilized to maintain that just-milled freshness. Given the high fat level and value-added ingredients, Max E Glo Complete is an ideal supplement for show horses, horses in training, conditioning horses, and sale horses. It contains 13% protein, 20% fat, and has a balanced calcium to phosphorus ratio. Max E Glo Complete can also be used for horses that are easy keepers at maintenance to light work. Max E Glo, at 1 to 2 pounds per day, will provide enough fat to keep the coat looking great and a sufficient level of important nutrients. For more information about Max E Glo Complete or any of the fine products offered by Manna Pro, please visit us at www.mannapro.com. *** Kensington Roustabout European Cut BlanketProduct review by Karen Pickering
The fit on this blanket seems better than most—no rub marks on the shoulders thanks to the shoulder gussets, and the extra padding across the withers keeps my horse comfortable. The Velcro straps on the underside fit nicely and are hidden from view, and the outer blanket straps have very easy clip connectors rather than the standard blanket buckles that are hard to get hooked properly without using two hands. The other features I absolutely love are the removable tail cover and the storage bag, made of the same material as the blanket, to keep it protected when not in use. The blanket is made from a high quality 600 x 1200 Denier Ripstop Teflon coated outer shell for strength and durability. It is 100% waterproof (repels dirt too!) yet still sports a breathable lining. The hollow fiberfill makes the blanket suitable for temperatures from the mid teens up to the high 60s. For more information on this and other Kensington products, see the back cover of this issue, call 877-469-1240, or visit www.KensingtonProducts.com. *** Sweet PDZProduct review by Raye Lochert
A big concern with horses living in stalls is the quality of the air they breathe. While keeping dust to a minimum is in every horse owner’s best interest, sometimes it is difficult to control ammonia fumes. Even the most fastidious stall cleaners will have difficulty in this department. Sweet PDZ makes controlling ammonia fast and efficient. Ammonia smell is created by urine saturation in flooring or ground. Sweet PDZ neutralizes the ammonia effectively, eliminating any harmful fumes. All it takes is a cup spread over the saturated area every couple of days. For just a few cents a day you can give your horse a fresher and healthier stall while saving money on bedding by having to use less of it to cover up the smell. Sweet PDZ is a non-toxic, all natural mineral that comes in granular and powder form. With so many products out there claiming to improve the health of your horse, it is hard to tell which ones are hype and which ones are worth it. Sweet PDZ is worth it. Cherine McKenzie of Sundown Horse Farm and Shelter has identified a problem and developed a practical solution! She got the idea of creating a safe surface for them to scratch and rub against, and she appropriately named it The Itchin’ Post! The deep, textured, flexible rubber surface is durable and made to withstand extreme temperatures. You can arrange the pads in a variety of ways on just about any sturdy surface. Pads can be mounted flat or wrapped around corners or posts. They are easily installed within a few minutes. *** Bob Avila Spur Collection – AVSO-200 Product review by Karen Pickering
The spur model I tested was the AVSP-200. Specifications: 1" band, 2" shank, 10 point rowel. The spurs come in antique brown with engraved silver.
A versatile spur for any western discipline, this is a very pretty spur with a nice floral design on the outer portion. The medium shank worked well for me with my short legs. It was easy to roll the spur up the side of the horse, offsetting my tendency to gouge instead of rolling the spur properly against her sides. I’m sure my mare appreciated it! I would recommend this spur to anyone. It is affordable, very functional, and nicely designed. For more information, see www.profchoice.com.

This law will now permit current use taxation for horse boarding, training, and racing facilities.
The fundamental purpose of current use taxation for farm and agricultural lands is to preserve from development land that is used for commercial agricultural purposes. Horse farms will now be counted as legitimate farming businesses and will benefit from current use taxation.
The continuing economic viability of horse farms depends on their ability to qualify as farm and agricultural use land, and this law now ensures the agricultural use classification for horse farms.
*** FurBuster™ De-Shedding Tool: The Right Tool for the Right Job Product review by NWHS staff
By now, you've probably seen many a shedding tool and perhaps even tried out a few on your own. So what makes the FurBuster different from any of the others? For one, the interchangeable blade means you can buy one tool for your horse, then swap out smaller blades for your dogs and cats rather than purchasing three separate tools. It also means that a damaged blade doesn't mean replacing the entire tool.
As with any shedding blade, the texture of your horse's coat and the sensitivity of his skin should be the biggest deciding factor on whether the FurBuster is for you. Fortunately, the FurBuster folks are as concerned about your animal's well-being as you are; they offer detailed instructions on their website regarding when and how to use the FurBuster without being too rough on your animal's coat.
Rest assured that when used correctly, this tool does its job and does it well. You'll be amazed by how much healthier your horse's coat looks after use. The ergonomic handle and balanced weight are definitely an improvement over some of the other top-heavy tools out there, allowing your touch on the tool to remain light for the greater comfort of your animals.

The Colorado 400t by Garmin Product review by Karen Pickering Loaded with features, the Colorado 400t GPS unit is ready for the avid hiker or horseback rider. If you’re new to GPS units it may take some time to get a handle on all the features, but it certainly is comprehensive. I found the color screen hard to read in sunlight, but there is no doubt an adjustment for this. The unit comes preloaded with U.S. topographical maps, including 3-D elevation perspectives. I was impressed with the detail on the maps - they showed every tiny little park in Blaine, WA, which is a pretty small town! It also includes wireless sharing between units and a built-in JPEG viewer, electronic compass, barometric altimeter and temperature sensor. The Colorado's small size fits in most coat pockets or saddle bags or can hang from a belt. The input wheel at the top of the unit makes it fairly easy to use one-handed. It also includes an SD card slot for additional data. If you’re ready for a high tech tool to go riding with, this unit can do it! The TR3 rake can maintain perfect footing in your arena and keep gravel drives free of dangerous potholes. We even used it to create riding trails and prepare the pastures for seeding. This strong piece of equipment is built to last. Hooking it up to your tractor is easy and adjustments do not require any tools. The rake has adjustable teeth that will fluff up the top two inches of footing or rip six inches into the hardest clay. The free-floating blade will take footing from high spots and fill in the lows while the rear comb leaves everything groomed perfectly. I had so much fun with the TR3 that my wife calls herself a TR3 widow. Learn more at www.abiequine.com. *** Professional Choice Western Saddle Pads Product review by Karen Pickering I’ve been evaluating the SMx Air Ride(TM) Western Show Pads for nearly a year. They are nice, thick pads that stay firmly in place and breathe to keep the horse’s back cool and protected. They hold up under all kinds of use, dirt and sweat, and can be brushed or hosed off (if you allow drying time) and wear well. If you want to keep your saddle pad clean, there is an optional felt saddle pad liner available. Made from ¼" needle punch felt, the 80% wool and poly blend is designed to be long-lasting. The Western Show Pads are breathable, shock absorbent, compression resistant, lightweight, flexible, moisture wicking and great looking. The science behind this saddle pad allows the horse to perform better due to the even weight distribution, shock absorption and flow of air, which promotes a cooler, more comfortable horse. They even come with a 60 day free test ride. For more information and other styles, visit www.profchoice.com. *** Equis Feeds = Value In today’s economy, with the growing cost of feed and the declining price of horses, the average equine owner is looking for ways to cut back. From the Golden Senior to the Pelleted Rice Bran, the advanced formulas of CHS Equis feeds promise the best nutritional investment in the Northwest’s equine feed market. *** Spalding Fly Predators Product review by Raye Lochert
I hate flies. I don’t like them landing on me, in my house, in my truck, in my barn and especially on my horses. I also know that my neighbors hate flies. I tried Spalding Fly Predators after meeting Tom Spalding at an expo. He sent a package of what looked like brown rice in a bag of shavings. I set them in a warm place, according to the directions, and in a couple of days there were little gnat-sized bugs crawling around. I sprinkled them around the entire ranch, wherever I thought flies might reproduce. I did this for the entire season and became a firm believer in Spalding Fly Predators.
We still had a few flies, but you wouldn’t notice unless you were looking for them. We would hold clinics, and at lunch time people wanted to know why we didn’t have flies. We spend far less money on fly sprays and I don’t need fly masks anymore.

*** Ursa Wagons Product review by Raye Lochert
If there were a four-wheel drive wagon, this thing would be a Hummer! The large tires make it easy to pull around the barnyard and through paddocks, and the wheel base gets me through stall doors with ease. It is so much more functional than any two-wheeled product. You don’t have to worry about balancing the load. Dumping the Ursa wagon is a breeze, even when fully loaded with wet manure. The turning radius is incredible—I can turn this wagon around in a stall that has a horse in it.
I use our wagon for much more than just cleaning stalls. I hook it up to the ATV to haul hay around. I use it to collect firewood, rocks, and yard trimmings, and to haul bedding around. I use it with the optional saddle racks to haul saddles to different spots on the ranch. This wagon has ability!

Hobby Horse's Rookie Rewards Program Hobby Horse Clothing Company, a show apparel maker, saw a need for rookie classes at open and breed shows, and created their Rookie Rewards program in 2008. And what a success! Last year, more than 150 open horse shows offered over 300 Rookie Rewards classes and gave out more than $30,000 in prizes. The program is offered again in 2009.
"We want to encourage novice riders in the show ring," says Hobby Horse president Suzanne Vlietstra. "Most shows celebrate the high-point winners, but we wanted to do something for those with less show experience."
Rookie Rewards class winners receive a $100 Hobby Horse gift certificate, and ribbons are provided for first through fifth place winners. Shows can register online for the program; the class specifications and pattern can also be downloaded by exhibitors and shows.
*** Ride the Old West this August To the horseback rider looking for adventure and excitement, the Outlaw Trail Ride, Inc. is a non-profit organization created to promote recreation and tourism in Wyoming. *** Ultimate Water Crossing DVD by Steve Rother DVD review by Karyn "KC" Cowdrey
With the promise of spring in the air, are you looking forward to new trail riding adventures? Do you dream about riding at the beach but don’t know how to do it safely and confidently? I suggest picking up Steve Rother’s Ultimate Water Crossing DVD series.
As with all of Rother's DVDs, you get a mini clinic on a disc. Designed to take you to the next level in developing a stronger foundation, you’ll learn how to safely and effectively approach crossing creeks, rivers, bridges, ponds and even take a foray into the ocean, all while building trust and leadership skills with your equine partner.
Another bonus: this series was filmed throughout our beautiful Pacific Northwest and shows real scenarios unique to our region.
So if you’re looking for some safe but interesting adventures out on the trails this year, I highly recommend The Ultimate Water Crossing DVD series to help you have a safe and fantastic time.

Equine Nutrition’s TriFecta 3 in 1 Product review by Karen Pickering
I recently started supplementing with Equine Nutrition's TriFecta 3 in 1, and have already found it so palatable that my mare, April, will eat it by itself. The packaging is very convenient with a resealable closure for freshness and an included measuring scoop.
The most noticeable benefit I've seen so far is the disappearance of the rings in April's hoof. Even over the short period I've been using the product, the rings are disappearing with each trim (two since I started supplementing). The little extra “bloom” in her eye and winter coat is definitely noticeable.
The science behind the product is solid. Developer Del Johnson was a pioneer in bringing organic selenium to the marketplace. Equine Nutrition introduced TriFecta in 2005 to combine nutraceuticals for hoof and joint health with probiotics and a vitamin-mineral supplement for the first time in one product.
Equine Nutrition’s products are pharmaceutical grade, which means they are the highest quality available to our equine partners. This is truly a product that addresses the needs of our horses in the Northwest.

A Natural Foundation: The Complete 10 DVD Set Review by Karyn "K.C." Cowdrey
Jonathan Field’s A Natural Foundation is a complete ground and riding how-to guide. From the beginning, Field’s DVD series takes you step by step through how to become an effective leader and strong communicator with your horse.
Throughout the series, Field shows as well as clearly explains on not only how to achieve a desired result--like your horse moving off of pressure--but why it is important and why you don’t want to try to skip steps.
The groundwork series flows cleanly and logically into the riding series. Throughout both, Field does a great job of covering the most effective ways to communicate with the horse, reminding us that consistency and having fun are keys to success.
This set is a good value for the amount of information covered. Basically, it is a clinic in a box for those who can’t attend in person. Learn more at www.jonathanfield.net.

Back Country Horsemen of America Represents You, Too By Sarah Wynne Jackson
Many of us dream of taking our horses out on wide expanses of untouched land, but the reality is that some of us reside in urban and city areas. Depending on where you live, “back country” might be a 50-acre town recreational area or an old railroad bed. These front country lands are the only safe places some equestrians have to get their horses out of the arena and to experience a taste of traveling by horseback. Back Country Horsemen of America believes that every trail used by horses is valuable and worthy of the effort of maintenance and preservation. If you want to know more about Back Country Horsemen of America or become a member and help keep all kinds of trails open for others, visit www.backcountryhorse.com.

Honda Generator Review by Karen Pickering
The Honda EU2000i generator is great for that extra power you need while traveling or camping remotely. The compact unit is great for charging up your RV battery, cooking a microwave dinner, or watching TV (for those who can’t live without).
I found the generator simple to use and super easy to start. The instructions were good and we were up and running in no time. The unit snuggled nicely into my trailer’s tack room, right under my blanket rack near the water tank. It was easy to access, and because it was so lightweight, it was easy to get out for quick use. Overall, the model is safe, secure, and simple to use and store. Great for someone like me who does a lot of camping on my own. If I can figure it out, you can be sure it’s easy to use!
I was certainly never short of people wanting to borrow it! This unit can be used to jump start your truck battery or run additional lighting for an event if you have the proper connections. It even ran music for us during a big event this summer. The motor is so quiet you hardly notice it’s running.
I definitely recommend this unit for those who enjoy remote camping. I know I’m good for about three days of camping without a power source, but much more than that and I need to recharge. Having a generator makes an extended stay possible, and comes in very handy for so many uses at home and away.
I would recommend a larger unit for trailers with high powered A/C that requires a little more wattage, but the tradeoff would be a loss of portability. If you're looking for something lightweight and practical to get the job done, the EU2000i fits the bill.

Farnam – Your Partner in Horse Care *** Your Input is Needed in a Nationwide Survey on the Unwanted Horse Problem
The problem of unwanted horses is being studied through a nationwide initiative of the Unwanted Horse Coalition (UHC) with help from equine associations, veterinarians, breeders, state and local law enforcement, horse owners, rescue/retirement facilities, and other facilities using horses. The first step is an online survey. Everyone with an interest in the welfare of horses is encouraged to respond at http://survey.ictgroup.com/uhcsurvey/. With tens of thousands of unwanted, neglected and abandoned horses in the U.S., some say the problem is a fast-growing epidemic. However, much remains unknown. Currently, there are few documented facts about the accurate number of unwanted horses, their age, sex, breed, recent use, value or what happens to them in the long run.
A comprehensive view of the problem depends on representation from all corners of the horse industry. *** Cold Therapy - Ice is Still the Best! In a recent study conducted by DVM Magazine, various methods of cold therapy were evaluated for effectiveness, from high-tech units costing up to $5000 to simple buckets of cold water. Of all the methods, it was concluded that old fashioned ice was the most effective for cooling horses’ legs. The Professional's Choice Ice Boot was found to be the most efficient way to administer that ice. The Professional's Choice Ice Boot rose above the others due to its practical design and superior quality neoprene. Elastic pockets inside the boot allow the user to vary the amount and location of the ice depending upon the injury or desired result. The boot is kept securely in place by hook-and-loop closures. The compression of the boot also adds to its effectiveness. According to the DVM Magazine article, “Research shows that compression further reduces edema and swelling and increases the effects of cold therapy.”
