Hobby Horse's Rookie Rewards Program
Hobby Horse Clothing Company, a show apparel maker, saw a need for rookie classes at open and breed shows, and created their Rookie Rewards program in 2008. And what a success! Last year, more than 150 open horse shows offered over 300 Rookie Rewards classes and gave out more than $30,000 in prizes. The program is offered again in 2009.
"We want to encourage novice riders in the show ring," says Hobby Horse president Suzanne Vlietstra. "Most shows celebrate the high-point winners, but we wanted to do something for those with less show experience."
Rookie Rewards class winners receive a $100 Hobby Horse gift certificate, and ribbons are provided for first through fifth place winners. Shows can register online for the program; the class specifications and pattern can also be downloaded by exhibitors and shows.

Ride the Old West this August
To the horseback rider looking for adventure and excitement, the Outlaw Trail Ride, Inc. is a non-profit organization created to promote recreation and tourism in Wyoming. In 1990 the Outlaw Trail Ride was developed to retrace the steps of the infamous Butch Cassidy, Sundance Kid, and the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang from Hole-in-the-Wall to Thermopolis, Wyoming. It offers the rider spectacular scenery, a fun-filled week of entertainment, and a chance to relive the history of the Wild West cowboys like nowhere else on earth.
The idea of a trail ride began as a 100th anniversary project organized by a group of volunteers from Hot Springs County and surrounding communities. The trail ride was a great success and funds raised have been donated to various organizations and individuals ever since.
The 2009 ride is August 2-8. For more information visit www.rideoutlawtrail.com.

Ultimate Water Crossing DVD by Steve Rother
DVD review by Karyn "KC" Cowdrey
With the promise of spring in the air, are you looking forward to new trail riding adventures? Do you dream about riding at the beach but don’t know how to do it safely and confidently? I suggest picking up Steve Rother’s Ultimate Water Crossing DVD series.
As with all of Rother's DVDs, you get a mini clinic on a disc. Designed to take you to the next level in developing a stronger foundation, you’ll learn how to safely and effectively approach crossing creeks, rivers, bridges, ponds and even take a foray into the ocean, all while building trust and leadership skills with your equine partner.
Another bonus: this series was filmed throughout our beautiful Pacific Northwest and shows real scenarios unique to our region.
So if you’re looking for some safe but interesting adventures out on the trails this year, I highly recommend The Ultimate Water Crossing DVD series to help you have a safe and fantastic time.

“We repeatedly recommend Triple Crown’s mineral supplement because it offers the highest mineral levels, the best balance, and best individual amino acid guarantee. It’s a great choice for a horse who is not on a fortified grain and only receives hay.”
