This season, give the gift of an extra trail ride, an extra moment with your equine companion. Winter doesn’t bring an end to the horse activities in the Pacific Northwest; despite the rainy and snowy days, dedicated Oregonians head out with their horses to hit the trails all year long.
“We trail ride all winter here,” says Kim McCarrel, a member of Backcountry Horsemen and Oregon Equestrian Trails (OET). “I live in Bend, and we have several places nearby with very sandy soil where we can trail ride in all but the worst weather. If the roads aren’t icy, we ride!”
Rose Mahoney of Philomath is also a member of OET. She showed Morgans for many years but now spends her days with her horses on the trails of Southern Oregon. She makes a point of continuing to ride year-round.
