Understanding Lameness
by Terry Swanson, DVM with Heidi Nyland
Review by NWHS editor Deb Taber
Understanding Lameness is a basic but thorough primer that works from the ground up to explain causes and effects of a wide variety of types of lameness. A lot of time is spent on the mechanics of the hoof, with case studies to illustrate potential problems and resolutions in an accessible format. Photos, drawings, and radiograph images help the reader understand exactly what to look for as well as what occurs internally.
Beyond the hoof, the book dedicates several chapters to other parts of the horse's body, addressing causes and treatments for lameness that broaden focus to the movement and connections of the whole horse. But perhaps the most useful part of Understanding Lameness for the average reader is the final chapter, which discusses how to manage your horse's home care after he is treated by the vet. Issues such as nutrition, exercise, and boredom are covered, along with more direct care such as cold therapy and administering medication.
I highly recommend this book for horse owners looking to better understand how to get and keep their horses sound.
