Just Taking a Break

by Janie McQueen

Sometimes a donkey needs a vacation too!

Nine years ago, a little donkey named Girlie came into Rene Ogan’s life. Rene provided a loving home, then Girlie moved in with a family friend whose old horse was lonely. After two years, he couldn’t take care of the critters and gave them both to the Ogans. Girlie soon became a worthy trail partner, following nicely without a rope. She went everywhere with Rene, who authored a trail guidebook for five western states. Nothing heavy was ever put in her custom pack-saddle, so she traveled miles of trail comfortably. Girlie never strayed and was a welcome addition to many riding groups.
